Because of the trees there is a lot of shade and an over abundance of needles on the ground.

  1. Pine trees acidify the soil. So you need shade lovers that prefer acidic soil. These are hydrangea (all types), azalea and rhododendron. Helebores should also do well, and I have an epimidium under a conifer that does very well.

  2. I have hostas and daylillies planted around my pine trees and they are doing great.

  3. I agree with Harry. Irises will also grow well, as will lilies of the valley and violets, but don't plant them unless they are bordered because they spread like crazy and are very difficult to get rid of.  Azaleas and rhododendrons should also do well.  I have several ground covers like periwinkle and some others I don't know the names of, and they also flourish.

    My sedum also does well.

  4. I agree with Harry, hostas and daylillies will grow just about anywhere

  5. There are few, except natives that can put up with the annual needle fall.  If you clean up the needles each year and add other compost( I added oak leaves) you can grow whatever you wish.  Without knowing what your zone and your desires (color, year round, screening etc.) and your weather I have no idea.
