What is the best pert of New York for small boutique shopping?

I have a friend in town visiting, but I don't know the city all that well myself yet. I was thinking SoHo and the village, but I don't know really what parts? What are some good, fun, cute neighborhoods, not too expensive. We're both 22, so were not looking for super classy places, just something fun. What areas and what subway stops? thanks

I would check out the garment/fashion district in Manhattan some stores are expensive but other have unique pieces for really good prices! Also shoe shopping in the garment district is the BEST!!!
