Aquatic frogs are fun and easy to care for- a great "starter" pet for kids.  All you need is a 1 gallon freshwater aquarium to house one or two little frogs.  The frogs are very inexpensive- $2-3 at most pet stores.  I feed mine dried shrimp pellets.  I would suggest getting a small snail as well, to help keep the tank clean.

For a small space, probably only a fish would work out. Rabbits and hamsters are very smelly and are quite a chore to clean and feed. So definitely go with the fish.

Rats are playful, and, contrary to popular belief, are clean and smart.  They don't take up much space, but need to get out of the cage every day.  Also, you could get a small bird like a budgie.  I don't have one but my friend does and it's really cute.  You could get a sugar glider, ferret, or an adorable hedgehog!  I want a hedgehog, but here in california they are illegal.
