Hi, I'm thinking to surprise my husband and book a weekend in Highlands, Scotland, for a walking-biking, landscape gaping type of holiday.

We've always wanted to see the highlands, but I have no idea where to go, location and accomodation wise.

Any suggestions regarding resorts/villages/towns/hotels would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Pitlochry.  Easily accessible, Pitlochry has some fantastic walks nearby, and also ideal for biking.  In October/November they also have The Enchanted Forest festival which has to be seen to be believed.  Some of the biggest trees in Perthshire are there.

  2. Try going to vistscotland website

  3. Fort William and the surrounding area would be great. It has mountain biking, hill walking and some of the most amazing scenery you could gape at.

  4. The Glenfinnan House Hotel, Glenfinnan PH37 4LT. Do not stay in Fort William. Fort William is a dreary blot on an otherwise superb area of landscape. Glenfinnan is in the same general area, the hotel is superb, has tremendous views from most rooms, is accessible by road or rail, and has immediate access to one of the best parts of the west highlands (including cruises on Loch Shiel from the bottom of the hotel garden). Don't just take my word for it: look in the Good Hotel Guide.

  5. Inverness is obviously a good centre.

I would personally suggest Brora which is about 90 miles further north. Unspoilt, even by tourists, stunning views, beaches that are miles long, wildlife and reasonably flat for cycling

Gairloch in Wester Ross is similar, in fact the road from Inverness to Gairloch as it goes beside Loch Maree has views you will never forget.

These are the real Highlands not the touristy places!!

  6. I'd agree with everyone who has said Fort William.  It makes a great base.  Hire a car and go 'up the Glen' for great sightseeing and landscape gawping.  Try climbing Ben Nevis for a good day out and also go and have a look at Glencoe.  It is also possible to go to Loch Ness and Fort Augustus which is lovely.  Also, there is the Fort William to Malaig Railway which is very scenic.

There is a caravan park and youth hostel right at the base of Ben Nevis but I don't know what it is called. This was very nice and about 2 miles from the town itself.

  7. I like dunoon and fort william

  8. I would recomend the Fort William and Lochaber areas, there are heaps to do there, plenty to see, and the folk up there are very friendly.

    Have a great weekend.
