We are a family of 7, ( aq couple with 5 children), that would like to move to Ottawa so that my husband has a better chance at employment. We would like to know where is the best neighbourhood to live in Ottawa, with access to grocery stores, Walmart, a children's hospital, pharmacies...etc.

Thanks for all your help :)

  1. Definitely Stick to the Hunt Club/South End of Ottawa then.

Our Children's Hospital (Cheo) where they will send

you if your child is sick anyway.. and a really good

    hospital.

We live in Central West - Experimental Farm Area,

and there's always the Civic Hospital, and the Queensway-

    Carleton.

But the south part of town has the hospital, plenty of townhouses, and A Wal-mart in that end.

Plenty of places to shop, and get quickly to, in case

of emergency.  Lots of families live there!

  2. If your family speaks French or wants to live in an are that there is more French then the East End specifically Orleans would be a good choice. If this is not the case I would highly recommend Barrhaven. Some would say Kanata.  The reason I suggest Barrhaven is that it has mostly all big box stores with a direct access to the 416 which is never busy to get to the 417. Downtown to Kanata esp during the Sens games on the 417 could take long.

There are many brand new developments all over Barrhaven to the south close to the main artery road "Standherd Road" The Fallowfield Via Rail rain station is central in Barrhaven on Fallowfield and Greenbank.

The airport is only 15 minutes away as well.

The Queensway Carleton Hospital is 8 minutes north of the north westerly part of Barrhaven.

    Good luck.

  3. First unless your husband speaks French or has a tech background the odds of improving his employment opportunities in Ottawa is slim.

Pretty much every neighbourhood has the criteria you list. With a family of seven though I would rule out downtown for obvious reasons. Any other neighbourhood is fine and I think the deciding factor should be proximity to your husbands employment.

Neighbourhoods like Barrhaven will give you better value but if your husband ends up working downtown or in the east end then the savings are not worth the lost time and frustration with commuting.

Certain neighbourhoods are also good to avoid. Vanier for example is inexpensive but not really the environment I'd want to raise children in. The same could be said about South Keys and the area around Bayshore.
