  1. The Great Pyramid in Cholula, Puebla is beautiful! You can go inside if you don't mind dark small spaces and climb up to see the cathedral on top it offers a beautiful view of the city and neighboring volcanos Popo and Ixta.

  2. Tulum, if u want to see pyramids beneath the caribean sea. The mayan sites are my favorites.

  3. Chitchen Itza is a beautiful Mayan pyramid about an hour and a half from Cancun.  It was recently voted one of the seven modern wonders of the world.  It was really worth the trip.  I loved seeing it.  If you go to Cancun, you can easily arrange tours to this site as well as Tulum as suggested by the previous post.  I have not sen the Tulum sight, but heard it was also beautiful.

  4. Teotihuacan at the north of Mexico City has the best and biggest ancient city of Mexico, The pyramid of the sun it's near to be the biggest in the world just after Keops in Egypt.

  5. There are thousands of pre-Colombian ruins in Mexico. You'll have lots of options.

Here's three I would sugest, all have to do with Mayan sites.

    Option 1, Beach and Ruins

Cancun or the Mayan Riviera are a good places to start. I agree with those who mentioned Chichen Itza. It's large and impressive and relatively easy to get to for tourists stay in or around Cancun. If you stay around Cancun you would also be within a day's drive of not only Chichen-Itza but, Tulum, Ek Balam, Coba, Muyil, El Rey (Cancun), San Gervasio (Cozumel) and a others.

    Option 2, Culture and Ruins

If you are looking for ruins and culture then you may want to consider staying at or near Merida. There is an impressive anthropological museum there and lots of other things too. Check out this site for starters:

Merida would put you within a days drive of Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Itzamal, Dzibilchaltun, Kabah, Sayil, Labna, Edzna and many others. Also, many cenotes and caves within a days drive.

    Option 3, Ecotourism and Ruins

Look at the State of Chiapas. There are many ecotourism options here, including waterfalls, hiking, kayaking and overnighting in Mayan villages are just some of the options. If you stayed in the modern city of Palenque you would be right near the ruins of the same name and within a few hours you could be at the sites of Bonampak and Yaxchilan (again, and others). Here's a site to start with if that sounds interesting:

    Enjoy your trip.
