not many airlines offer tickets anymore.  they offer e-tickets.  you can purchase flights through priceline, expedia, direct from the airline themselves.  some hotels offer discount flights if you purchase the flight through them.

Always check with the airline first. Then check travelocity, and the other online sights.

2)  Figure out the airlines servicing the destination

3)  Go to the individual airline websites and check the fares.

4)  Compare with your choice of travel website

5)  Surprise.....a number of times you will find

      the lowest fare on the airline website.

Purchasing directly from the airline reduces their cost and the savings are eventually passed on to the customer by the smart companies!!

The above also holds true for hotels.  Call the hotel directly and you will more than likely receive a lower rate.

Cheaptickets.com is pretty good. You can see which airliner is offering the cheapest flight, then go to their site and do the same search. It's usually a bit cheaper directly through the airlines site - sometimes they don't have as many fees.
