Is it only a young man's game, or do you think someone could make a career change at middle age into owning their own restaurant? I know it is one of the riskiest ventures in the world, but I would still like your advice anyway. Thanks!

  1. BOTH! I have been in the Restaurant Bus. and there is much more to it than " Just Cooking a Good Meal".

  2. I would hold off in this economy.  Big chains are struggling.

The best way to know the industry is for you is to work in one.  School is just not the same.

  3. Both are important but you must have experience to be successful. You can learn the business side without schooling but it will be faster and more efficient to take some business classes. There are some things you can only learn in the restaurant business by doing it.  But, before you take the plunge, consider carefully if you really know what you're getting into. Have you worked in restaurants much? Do you love the business?  Or, are you in love with the idea of being a restaurant owner? Unless you have a lot of experience and really enjoy the business, I would recommend against it.
