  1. Travel over to Interlaken - there are so many opportunities of hikes and visits that you could stay there for weeks!  (You only need to use Interlaken as a Base Camp, by the way) If you take the lake steamer over to the little quaint town of Brienz and then take the reliable Post Bus service you can stop by the wonderful place that is Ballenberg.

Ballenberg is an open air museum in that displays traditional buildings and architecture from all over Switzerland! Ballenberg has over 100 original buildings that have come directly from where they used to stand, elsewhere in Switzerland. Ballenberg offers a wonderful hiking experience that is punctuated by beautfiul landscape and beautiful buildings - on a slightly more touristy side of things, they have people who re-enact the lives of those who once lived in the buildings but I will say that this is fascinating.

After visiting Ballenberg, you should (on a Sunny Day) go off to one of the many wonderful peaks surrounding Interlaken. You could visit the Schiltorn (which was the settng for E. Blofeld's lair in the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" ) a quaint little mountain famed not only for its 007 connections but also for the revolving restaurant that sits at the top.

Maybe, however, you want something that is the pinnacle of things to see in Switzerland - the Jungfrau. Take the train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and from there the train to Kleine Scheidegg and finally you can take the magical train up to the "top of Europe" - the Jungfrau offers you a spectacular (this is true) view of the European Alps.

There is also the "Schynige Platte" which is a large high-mountain plateau accessible only by little red train or by foot. From here you have wonderful views of lake Thun, the Jungfrau, Eiger etc. as well as excellent hikes down the mountain. I'll post the website of the railway but it is entirely in German so I'd refer to the Jungfrau website.

I could ramble on but I don't want to be sued by someone for boring you to death so I'll leave it at that. You can find a lot much more information on the website of the Swiss Tourism Board, MySwitzerland (also will provide help for finding hotels) See the link below.

Hope very much that this has helped and I hope you will enjoy your stay in Switzerland!

    S.O.

  2. for enjoying the country side of switzerland...do go for interlaken firstly...its divine....zermatt is also a gr8 place...just relax in these two cities for four nights...2nghts in Interlaken(2-2.5 hrs by train from Zurich) 2 nghts Zermatt(no idea bout it...Maybe 4-5 hrs from Zurich...i recommend a train from Interlaken which acc. to me will be 3-4 hrs)...

    Have Fun In Switzerland...

For info on Main Swiss Cities(including the 2 i told above)...go to switzerland-diaries.s5.com...

  3. If you prefer countryside to cities you are going to the right country. October might be cold, so you should go to the mountains because its normally not foggy up there like it might be in cities like Zurich or Luzern for instance. 3 days is not much so I would just choose one place and enjoy the tracking ways to the top of the mountains. You haven't mentioned where you are flying to, so I am just writing some options and a quick comment on the ones I know

Arosa / less famous than the others, perhaps good cost benefit / great for families

St. Moritz /  famous, sophisticated and expensive

Saas Fee / very charming, less famous

Zermatt /   famous sophisticated and expensive

Davos / very famous, but bigger and in my opinion less charming

Dont forget to have a good fondue and you should try the fondue chinoise if you are not vegetarian, and also the racklet and zuricher geschnatzels with some good white wine.

    Have a good trip
