what is possibly the best way to carry food or arrange for soil to grow food in a space colony?

  1. In a anything big enough to be considered a colony were to be built in space it would have too many occupants to keep supplied from Earth so growing food would be a necessity, unless the Soylent Green project pans out MU HA-HA!

    Soil would not be needed but plants are still pretty needy. Genetic engineering would be used to produce a plant that can provide the maximum amount of nutrition, produce a lot of oxygen, and grow quickly under artificial lighting. Artificial lighting would most likely be used as using direct solar radiation would probably kill the plants and it would probably be more energy efficient to use that sun light with solar panels instead of taking it directly to the plants. With proper recycling of human wastes this process could continue with little outside assistance.


  2. the best possible way to grow plants on a space ship wouldn't involve soil..... since we can grow stuff just fine without soil, it would just be adding unnessicary components in a ship that's probably already struggling for interrior space as it is...
