I have hardwood floors throughout my house. My dog has started having accidents due to his age. What do I use to clean them that will not destroy the poly/shine finish?

  1. Sherri:  Clean your hardwood floors with Bruce hardwood floor cleaner from Homedepot or Ace hardware.

  2. Edit:

The hardwood flooring place told me about the sudsy ammonia.  It's also good on linoleum.

There are many products, but first you may want to address the dog's accidents to get rid of that smell.  There is a very good product called Nature's Miracle (white spray bottle with red writing) and it is excellent at neutralizing dog urine/f***s odours.  It is safe for use around animals and children (non-toxic).

I usually use lemon-scented sudsy ammonia mixed with warm water when cleaning my hardwood floors.  It cuts grease and dirt, is very cheap and doesn't streak.  It won't hurt the finish.  DO NOT mix it with bleach (it makes a toxic gas).

Alternatively, go to any store that sells hardwood flooring and buy a product from them.  This is a more expensive option, only necessary a couple times a year.

  3. Tea.

  4. I have real oak sanded and finished hard wood floors.Keeping them crisp is a challenge. The best product that I have found is Murphy's Oil Soap.I have tried tons of different products. Most of them left a residue or steaks.I think you will be happy with Murphy's.

  5. If you use just warm water and DAWN dish detergent to clean the floor and then rinse the floor you will have no problems.

I installed wood floors for about 7 years.

  6. One cup of vinegar to a gallon of warm water is the safest and best way to clean your hardwood floors. The vinegar will also neutralize the urine.

Murphy's Oil Soap is to be avoided as it does nothing to neutralize the dog urine and leaves a residue that may make a buff and recoat impossible in the future.

Having been the owner of an older dog (Boxer) I have been through this too, hardwood is infinitely easier to clean than carpeting for accidents.^
