What is the best programming lanuage to learn?

Ok i want to learn a programming language but i can't decide which to learn. I know that some are easier than others but i'd rather learn the one that is most productive and useful.

java or somw version of c

Perl....at least that is what my programmers use and they seem to like it.  Or learn some advanced HTML ......like DHTML

Pick something that you want to program for, then chose from the available languages.

As an opinion, I believe c (or c++ either one) is the best to start off with, as it works with most if not all the tools (compilers and libraries) that come with the certain projects I use ( devkitPro, pspsdk and other I am not using anymore ).
