I have been told that some of the low sulfur coal out of Pennsylvania is the best quality for making coke (a type of charcoal) for steel manufactuing. That is why most of the steel mills began there in the 19th Century.

Anthracite is hard coal and burns the cleanest, but it comes from fewer places on earth, mainly northeastern Pennsylvania.

Bituminous coal is soft coal and is much dirtier when it burns.
