What is the best radar detector?

To me the best bang for your bunch radar detector is the BEL 955, for $179 at RadarBusters.com. The BEL 955 is not the best but it is certainly up there with the top 3 radar detectors [Escort 8500 X50($300), BEL RX65 ($329.99), and Valentine 1($400)] I personally have a BEL Vector 995($270) and Valentine 1($400) and their is only a slight difference in detection range. I like both detectors equally due to their unique features.

The BEST radar detector is relative to the features you like/need.....There are 5 radar detectors with equal performance in most respects and will save you tickets contrary to what some will tell you. The Top 5 radar detectors are (in no specific order) the:

BEL RX65

BEL STi

Escort 8500 X50

Escort 9500i

Valentine 1

I personally use the Valentine 1 as well as the BEL vector 995 both have saved me huge fines when dealing with police radar. But for dealing with Laser you really needs a laser jammer (illegal in some states) I use a Blinder M20 and Laser Intercepto laser jammers on my Volvo along with LaserShield plate cover.

For those that say a radar detector is just a ticket notifier obviously don't have experience with a top level detector. Ask any of my friends that ride in my car. My detectors both sniff out cops easily and give me plenty of time to slow down when usually going 10-15mph over the limit.

Look at the cobra line of radar detectors but under $80.00 bucks will be very hard to find that is really any good...

As an alternative to buying a cheap radar detector, I would seriously consider just never driving over the speed limit.

The cheaper the radar detector, the fewer features it has, the fewer radar bands it detects, the less likely it is to detect those bands, the more often you will receive false alerts, and the more visible it is to police radar detector detectors (RDD). If you use a cheap radar detector, you are likely to 1. not receive an alarm when you should, 2. receive false alarms when you shouldn't, and 3. receive a ticket and have the device confiscated.

You can't buy a worthwhile radar detector for under $100. Period.

If you are concerned about police laser (LIDAR), your only alternative is a laser jammer. Most radar detectors will detect police laser, but by then it's already too late. 0.2 seconds under the laser and your speed is recorded. A laser jammer detects and jams the laser gun, allowing you time to adjust your speed if necessary.

If you are concerned about police laser, you'll need a laser jammer. The best radar detectors also detect laser, but the laser only has to hit your vehicle for 0.2 seconds to read your speed; not nearly enough time to adjust your speed if your laser alarm alerts. A laser jammer jams the laser gun's speed reading while alerting to the laser, giving you time to check your speed before turning off the jammer. Like radar detectors, laser jammers are LEGAL to use in almost every state.
