What is the best road bicycle handlebar tape? I am looking for the kind that is super-spongy to absorb bumps?

I think cork tape is the best, I use Cinelli cork tape (although like most tapes, they are stingy with the amount and it may take a re-wind to get it even on both sides of the bars!)

There are gel tapes available,(which are softer than cork) for old people or riders with carpal tunnel syndrome but I have not been impressed by them.

Try cork tape first!
