We will travel in October and will spend the weekend in Melbourne, then we are planing on spending 3 days in the Yarra Valley in the wineries and then we need to get to Sydney by road. We will leave Yarra Valley on a Wednesday and have to be in Sydney by Friday. Any suggestions where to stop in the middle, or what route has the best scenery???

  1. Go from the YV to Healesville(see the CM Sanctuary) then north toward Buxton(Acheron Way)-very scenic.

Then go thru the Strathbogie ranges onto the highway I. You could divert to more wineries at Rutherglen but make sure you head to Beechworth then the back road past Thredbo (The Alpine Way).

Stop at Thredbo YHA the night and walk to the top of Aust's highest mtn

Check out Canberra then Goulburn then veer off the highway towards Bundanoon, MossVale and Bowral(Southern Highlands).

Then head to the coast via Robertson and Fitzroy Falls to near Nowra then follow the coast road north but dont miss Stanwell Tops.

Later approach Sydney via the Royal National Park and maybe a trip to Watttamolla or Bundeena.

  2. BIG TIP! The Great Alpine Hwy. It takes you along the Great Dividing Range to NSW

  3. For the best scenery I would head up through Gippsland to Omeo then through Mt Hotham to Harrietville, followed by a trip across the Alpine Way to Jindabyne  through Thredbo.  Then down to Bega via Cooma and up the coast to Sydney.  Lots of bendy bits, and not a straight line.  If that is too far head up the Hume to Albury and then do the Alpine Way from there.
