What is the best route by car from Guadalajara to San Miguel de Allende? The fastest & safest, tolls are ok.?

I am in Ajijic on Lake Chapala and will be traveling to San Miguel in a few weeks by car. I have seen several different routes, one via Leon, one via Irapuato and one via highway 15 (toll) to Mexico DF. I hear its about 4 hours but i'd like to hear some views on how to get there. Speed is important as I only have 3 nights in SM de A. Thanks.

It's 370 kilometers and 4 hours of driving time and 220 pesos in tolls according to the route calculated by the link below. It's in Spanish.  You might also ask this question at the webboard on chapala.com (second link) I'll bet that more people on chapala.com have made that trip compared to the people on Yahoo/Answers.
