We are a couple from India and have read not too encouraging stories of changeover at Naples

  1. I always take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Naples and change trains there. There may be people at the train station that want to "help" you find your way around, but you can tell them to go away. I've never had any problems just moving from one part of the station to the other. There are no trains between Sorrento and Salerno, you'd have to take a bus. Then your trip to Florence is longer and many of the options for the trip require a train change in either Naples or Rome.

  2. I certainly wouldn't leave my luggage unattended at Naples train station but I passed through there twice and didn't get robbed.

To get to Salerno you need to go along the Amalfi Coast either by bus or boat which is quite scenic.

Naples is also a fantastic city and worth at least a day trip. They have a great museum.
