I am 18 and currently a Criminal Justice major in college and I plan to be in a federal law enforcement agency. I would like to get a little bit of experience with weapons and since I'm only 18 I want to buy a shotgun. I'm looking for a shotgun that is great quality and one that may be easy to use since I am inexperienced with guns. I am willing to spend up to $600 or $700.

  1. Mossberg 590

Cream of the crop for what you want to do withit

Remington 870 Express is a cheap knock off of what the gun used to be

  2. Definitely look at the Remington 870 pump which is well within your budget and a great shotgun to boot.

  3. personally I think you get best value for dollar with Mossberg

the 500 if you want a pump or 930 for autoloader

they offer combos with 2 barrels for field or tactical use

the Remington 870 is also an excellent choice

  4. pshh 600-700?

Go to your local pawn shop, but a Mossberg 500 for like 150-200 bucks.

Put the rest in ammo and training.

  5. Remington 870 12g

  6. A nice one to start with is the 500 series Mossberg.  Many different configurations and some models come with multiple barrels.  $275-$550.  The Remington Wingmaster series,  some have multiple barrels, is also excellent $350-$500.

If you have never fired a shotgun before, then I suggest you start with a 20Ga. 3" shell. It will get you started and the recoil and noise level is a lot less than the 12Ga. Check around your local area and find out where they shoot sporting clays.  It will teach you shotgunning real quick and is fun to do. Good Luck

  7. Without a doubt Remington 870 express magnum.  I own one personally, and it is AWESOME.  No it is not a high end Benelli, or a fancy over/under shotgun, but as a famous article states (referenced below) "it always goes bang."  Though it is a pump (something you might not be looking for) it cycles shells very quickly.  The accessories are endless, and it is EXTREMELY easy to clean/maintain.  Probably most important,  A LOT of law enforcement already use 870's in their arsenal.  PLUS (I love the 870 if you can't tell) with the money you save (it's roughly $250-270) you can spend the difference on shells and slugs and become a really good shot with all that practice.  I use it for trap shooting, and have no problem getting 4 shots off at four clays (even if I miss....).  However a semi-auto gives you obviously a higher rate of fire.  If that's what you are looking for, get a Remington 11-87,  It is solid, simple, and also easy to maintain.  If you want looks and performance...though a little more expensive get virtually any Benelli or Browning.  Check out the youtube source for Browning.  It's out of your range, but trust me, their lower end products don't fall to far from this tree.  AGAIN*** Get an 870 you will never regret it, and most importantly again, a lot of law enforcement agencies already use Remington 870's and you can upgrade it into a more tactical setup...exactly what you need!!!!!!

  8. Remington 870 Express

  9. I recommend a Benelli shotgun.

  10. For Law Enforcement or Defense a pump action 12 ga is hard to beat.  Many agencies seem to use Remington 870s.  Mossberg 500 is right up there.  $700 should get you two 870s or three 500s.  Mossberg also makes the military model 590.  The great thing about a shotgun is you can load it with a multitude of different ammunition.  Full power buckshot to much use reduced recoil buck.  Still to much get some light trap rounds and work your way back up to the heavy stuff.

If you feel you need to spend the full $700 on a shotgun look into one of the semi autos like the Benelli Super 90.

  11. Remington 870 12 ga pump with multi-choke barrel.

  12. A semi-automatic shotgun will have less felt recoil, in other words will be more comfortable to shoot.  Something like a Remington 11-87 or Remington 1100 would probably be in your price range.  Pump shotguns, like the Remington 870 mentioned in a previous repsonse are very reliable, although they'll have a little more recoil than an autoloader.  The pump or semi-automatic are closest to what you'll be dealing with in law-enforcement.
