I'm thinking all inclusive, but I'm more curious where to start looking. Is there a list of do's and dont's, or a place to chat to other people on this subject?

  1. selloffvacations.com, belairtravel.com...

search under "discount travel packages" for more....

  2. I've booked for Mexico from Toronto from all of these sites:

    http://www.selloffvacations.com

    http://www.itravel2000.com

    http://www.belairtravel.com

They are all Canadian. Not sure about dos and don'ts but I find this site helpful in selecting a resort:

Here's the page with reviews of Mexican resorts:

I find boards like these helpful more often than not because you can't rely the travel companies brochures for unbiased opinions. Just remember that you can't please everyone so no resort is going to get 100% great reviews.

Also, on the all inclusive two things to watch out for:

One, read the list of what is included in the all inclusive. While most all-inclusives will give you everything you need for a great vacation it's best to be sure you understand what's each resort's all inclusive package includes. For example, if you really hate buffet dining and want all or most all of your meals at an a la carte restaurant, make sure that there are not limits on that. If you link to drink well into the night then make sure the all inclusive bar doesn't close at 11 pm and so on.  It helps know what is and what isn't included before hand especially since you are paying for the all-inclusive part of your holiday and at different resorts that can mean different things.

Secondly, if you are at an all-inclusive resort you want to be at one where everyone is on the all-inclusive plan. Not just some people. If you have one group of toursits on an all-inclusive plan and another group that is paying cash, the bartenders and waiters are almost always going to serve those paying cash first. The practise of having some payng and some all-inclusive guest at the same resort is pretty rare these days so you probably won't see it. But I would say if you see a resort where the all-inclusive is an option and not an automatic then it's probably a resort you don't want to be at (for all-inclusive anyway).

  3. Usually the places offering all inclusive are beach resorts, so the destinations where you could go are: Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Huatulco......
