  1. Go straight for the shortboard and perservere until you've got it.

I can't see any advantage in learning on a hard board (do you mean long board?).

  2. I'm desperately trying to work out what this question is referring to.

  3. a small one numbnuts

  4. What size board have you been surfing on? You are going to want to go shorter from here. If you eventually want to short board, you aren't going to want to longboard forever. Let's say you ride a 9'0 board right now. Try buying a funboard in the 7'6 range. This will give you stability that the longboard did, while challenging you because it is shorter and more manuverable.

Buy used because again, you aren't going to want to ride this forever either. Get a decent condition one, but not too expensive. Ride this until you are comfortable and feel yourself wanted to move down again. This may take a while; surfing has a steep learning curve. But stick with it. Shortboarding is really fun. Build up your arms to paddle quickly and you will find it easier to catch the waves on your smaller board. Good luck. If you have any questions contact me, and be sure to talk to the people in your local surf shops. They will help a lot. Have fun
