We're planning to go down to the snowys and want to know which snow field to stay in, we're only going down with the kids to play int he snow, (i.e not skiing or boarding) which is the best one that has an area for taboggining and snowman making etc.... any good hotels or nice places for kids that you know of also?

  1. Selwyn Snowfields is good for this sort of stuff.  You can drive quite close to the snow, and there is lots of room for playing in the snow.

At Thredbo there may be snow that is easily accessible, but it is quite likely that this will be a thin strip of manmade snow and it will be crowded with skiers & boarders.  You can get a chairlift ride to the top, where there will be snow, but it might be a bit worrying with a couple of young kids.

Perisher Blue has lots of accessible snow, and the road up is usually through snow covered country so you can stop on the way.  You will be required to carry snow chains (which you can hire) if you drive in the national park.  You can also get to PB on the Skitube - an underground railway that runs from Bullocks Flat on the Alpine Way.

You can get accommodation in the resort for Thredbo and Perisher, but it can be expensive.  A cheaper alternative is staying in Jindabyne.  For Selwyn the nearest towns are Adaminaby and Tumut - there is no on snow accommodation.
