I'm trying out for my high school's musical in a few months. I want to sing the right song. What do I sing? Oh and I do not know what the play is.

  1. Well, if you can help it don't sing a song from the show unless the directors ask you to at the audition because many directors already have an opinion formed on how that song should be sung and may not see you for that part. When you find out what the musical is, sing a song from a different musical with the same composers. This way the song will be similar to the songs in your musical without having to overcome the preestablished opinions of your directors. Lastly, always sing a song in your range. It won't sound good if your struggling for high notes or if they can't hear you on the low notes. Try to sing a song that shows off your range while still allowing you to have good volume.

  2. Excellent advice from Kristie B there.  The only thing I would add is that you shouldn't sing anything from a currently popular musical - so avoid Wicked, Hairspray, Spring Awakening, RENT, Phantom of the Opera, Legally Blonde and Avenue Q because they'll all be very overdone songs.  You need to find out what the show is before you can really make a decision on the song!

  3. Find out if your audition provides the song you audition with.  If not, consult a voice teacher about which classic Broadway song would suit your voice best, and practice, practice, practice!

  4. well if you are trying out for a musical, picking a song from a musical, is probably best. No one really kow the best song for you, becasue it has to be just for YOU! I would find out my voice range, and then choose a song accordingly. Most people's voices sound good with musical songs anyway, which is a good thing. If you have a high voice, i would try the song "think of me fondly" from the Phantom of the Opera. It is a beautiful song, and if you capture the right sounds and expressions, it is gauranteed to be a winner. :)

    good luck!
