  1. dude depends on the type of music you play and the type of tonality you re looking for.. what kind of guitar do you have .. single coil or double coil pickups..there are allot of options... try craigslist .com for a good used amp or try musicians friend.com  for a new amp you can actually here the amp on line..   there are tube preamps with solidstate secondaries..  i think there is a hi-watt 100 watt head thats very loud thats cheap brand new.. but does'nt get the crunch like a true tube when you crank it up  good luck

  2. for the money Kustom gives the best bang for the buck in my opinion and musicians friend has the best prices, check out that 12 gauge $99 bucks!! my kid has one and sounds great!! not as good as my quad 100 dfx but for the price I wouldent throw rocks at it, dident see a review for it at harmony, maybe I should write one

  3. It depends on what sound you want

These are good amps for under $300

    1. Vox "Valvetronix" 30 watt for $250. This baby is real nice because all you do is turn the k**b to get a a totally different sound. You really don't need any extra pedals with it unless you want to add them. The "Nu metal" channel is really killer though!  It also has like 8 to 10 different modeling amps too so you can play Blues, Vintage, Rock or Metal on it.

    2. Marshall amps...what can you say?  The name says it all really.

    3. Line 6 are good amps too.

    4. Randall amps are also good too. Kirk Hammett of Metallica uses Randall. I'm dying to try an Randall amp when I can. I've heard these suckers are really loud.

Also....please don't forget to read the customer reviews on the amps too. That also helps when shopping for an amp. That way you have a good idea of what kind of sound you are looking for. The best advice is go down to your local store and fool around with some of the amps there. I go to my Guitar Center in my area as much as I can & fool around on as many different amps I can to see what they sound like. Because I myself will be getting am amp soon too. Hope this helps and good luck shopping...
