I agree with the hole Greenstone thing.  But I wouldn't get a bone carving unless you really understand the culture and rules around it, as it is not something you can just put on and take off whenever you like.  I was given mine (it must be a gift, you cannot buy one for yourself) about 16 yrs ago and I have never ever taken it off.

  4. Depends on how much you want to spend. I would go for the contemporary Maori crafts like genuine pounamu pendants or a feathered cloak.

  7. I agree with the bone carving suggestion. Though my favorite new zealand souvenir was my Kirituhi tattoo at Ta Moko in Auckland.

  8. Possum nipple warmers!!!! Excellent. Paua jewellery is always nice, but not as fun as nipple warmers. A Colin McCahon print... All Blacks jersey... Pounamu carvings are special.. I could go on forever.
