What is the best strategy/war PC game?

I want to buy a game for the pc that takes a lot of work, lots of thinking and planning etc. I like the war games as well as the Sim City type games, games that takes lots of playing. I don't like the sci-fi or fantasy kind of games, if that makes sense.

gran turismo 5 or little big planet there both amazing first person shooters which have amazing guns and destructable scenery also there is a army game coming out in november clled grand theft auto 4.

Civilization IV (along with various expansion packs) is a good one here. It's not sci-fi or fantasy (though there are some mods to make it so), it takes a lot of work, planning and thinking to build a good civilization and even average difficulty level can be quite difficult because you have to balance everything and you never know when someone will decide they want to take over your land.

It can take a while to actually learn all the good methods though, like what to try build before anyone else does, where to place your cities and how to balance building your armies/filling your treasury/advancing your technology and so on.

Command and Conquer is a good war one too, especially in skirmish games, but it might be a bit too sci fi with some of the more advanced technology used. For the most part it's not though. There's a demo here: http://www.gamershell.com/download_17978...
