My child has previously learned to play the ukele, organ and recorder by listening to the notes. For some time now she has wanted to play the violin and now she able too, she was told that in order to start playing the violin she would have to first learn the piano. This is not practical where we live so she chose the viola because it has a deeper tone and will be better for her height. I would value some opinions from other people thankyou.

  1. Go with the guitar!!

  2. violin is the best string instrument. for every one tall or sort or ... . that the magical instrument !

  3. im a tall teen and i play guitar and violin and piano

  4. Whoever told her that she needs to play piano before learning violin is completely wrong - do NOT take any more advice from this person.

The idea that height is a factor in what instrument to choose is silly.  She should play whatever instrument she's interested in, not the instrument that you think she should play.

If she can already play the ukelele (I assume that's what you meant by "ukele") then the guitar is a short stretch.  It's a lot of fun to play and is the world's most popular instrument.  That's what I would recommend.

  5. Whoever told you that your daughter had to play piano before learning violin is an idiot.

There is no particular correlation between height and choice of instrument.  Hand size might be more of a consideration in selecting an instrument, yet I know several very tall and large men with big hands who are wonderful fiddlers and mandolin players (violin and mandolin = small fingerboards).  You learn and you adapt, with practice.  If your daughter can get around on a tiny ukelele fingerboard, she can get her fingers around on a violin, too, if she wants.

I'm a fairly short woman (5'2") with smallish hands and I played electric bass guitar (long neck, wide distances between frets) for several years when I was in my 20's.  I learned how to stretch my fingers or shift my hand position as needed to get to the notes I needed.  Again, you adapt, with practice.

If your daughter truly likes the viola and wants to play it because she enjoys the sound, great!  But please don't feel that certain instruments are off-limits to her or that she's limited to playing only certain instruments because of her height or size.  That's silly.

  6. the violin is smaller and higher pitched. the viola is bigger with a lower pitch.  the cello is the biggest with the lowest pitch. viola should work with any height. good luck.

  7. You do not say whether the child participates in an orchestra of any kind, but tall people handle String Bass quite well.  But, really, the child should play the instrument in which they have the most interest, in order not to resent it later and give up entirely.

  8. harp

  9. Tall ones? well when your tall your arms are usually longer so i would say trombone.  I am good @ trombone but i have problems reaching the furthest postion since i am short. i litterally have a string tied to my finger so i can put the slide a little further and jerk it back. but its a really fun instrument to play and whether in jazz band or symphonic band it is needed anywhere.

  10. Guitar is for teenagers

  11. bass guitar
