  1. Fertilizer will not benefit grass until it sprouts. Most lawn fertilizers are way to strong for new grass. Purchase one that is recommended for new grass and follow the directions carefully.

As for it not sprouting, most likely, the seed is drying out or the seedlings are. Make sure the soil you are planting the seeds in is loosened at least an inch down ( 2" is even better). The seed should be laid then pressed into the soil to make good soil contact. Mulch should be applied over this to retain moisture. I like to use peat moss for this. The areas should be kept damp at all times and the new grass as well (for at least two weeks).

The frequency for watering will depend on the temp and amount of direct sun exposure. The new grass should be cut with a SHARP lawnmower blade at 2". Most people wait way too long for the first cutting. You should never remove more than 1/3 of the blade on any grass and a dull lawnmower blade will only pull the grass out or damage the ends of the grass blades that remain.

  2. any type of natural fertilizer will work well.  like cow dung or soybean seed shells mixed in with the dirt, then mix the seed a little, then cover with hay.

way better than using those rollout seed mats.

and patience my friend.  youre not going to see results in a week.  rome wasnt built in a day
