No ironing board is sturdy on carpet, not because of the board, but because of the carpet.  Carpet is made of fibers and not solid, thus they "move".  If there is a pad under the carpet, this enhances the movement.  When you move the iron back and forth,it causes different pressure points on the feet of the board and  it becomes unsteady.  Walk across a mattress and you get the same result.

I use my old ironing board, I took the cover off because it was sooo raggedy.  I just put a bath towel on top of the iron board , lay my shirt on top of the towel, and iron away!!!

i broke my ironing table while moving and i just put a towel down on my bathroom counter top and iron on there. i hate dragging the ironing board in and out of the closet so i just us my counter top!

Anything that ISN'T the carpet. Before we bought an ironing board I ironed on the carpet, all the scum on it melted and I burnt a hole in the floor, damaged my clothes and ruined the iron.

Whatever's cheap, cheerful and doesn't fall over.
