We might be moving to Auckland for my husband's work. What is the best suburb to live in? I don't drive so I need to be able to walk to parks, a gym with a good creche and the shops. His work will be paying so it can be expensive!

  1. Hi! I live in Auckland. It is a city of many suburbs. All have their own little communities- usually childcare and bus stops and gym are available.

I live on the North Shore in Takapuna, it's a little more expensive then other areas, but it has EVERYTHING one needs. I cycle or walk everywhere. There are regular buses into town and the beach is really close.

There are lots of other nice suburbsclose to the CBD. Some have almost all asian communities. It's worth doing some research if that is going to bother you.

The CBD (Central Business District) is the city center- where there are high rise buildings and it is busy with traffic. It will have everything, but you will be missing out on the parks etc.

It's worth looking at www.googlemaps.com to find out where the parks are. There are plenty of them and they usually have playgrounds.

Mt Eden, Ellerslie and Remuera are nice family areas.

The dodgey areas are in South Auckland- manuewra, manukau and otahuhu so don't go there!

    Hope this helps!

  2. If money is no object then you might like round the Eastern Bays - Kohimarama, St Heliers, Mission Bay area which has the beach, some shops, not so sure about a gym and creche.

I know Browns Bay has all of the things you ask for. It is on the North Shore but out further. It has a beach, recreation centre and gym, lots of good shops, playcentres, children's play area  etc on the beach front, library, tennis, bowls, a great place for someone who doesn't drive. There are also plenty of buses if you want to go to other places. The North Shore is a nice place to live.

There are many nice areas, but getting something geared to small children and your needs is not always likely in them all.The ones more likely will probably be a little further from the central city area. You may find Ponsonby or Herne bay, or even Mt Eden has many of the things you want if close to the city is also on your wish list.
