  1. Im 5'6 105 so were bout same size Ive been surfin 5 years though, I HATE when people say start out on a longboard, start out on a shortboard go for about a 5'11 about 3 inches thick or so to a 6'4 2 and a half inches thick... good luck and its the thickness that helps most not the length when your beginning

  2. A longboard is actually the best choice to learn on.  Especially if you've never surfed in your entire life.  You'll be moving muscles in ways you've never done before.  Balancing on a board while paddling is just awkward for beginners.  A shortboard would make it even more awkward.

If you try surfing on a shortboard, you will only be frustrated as you may never catch a wave.  Shortboards are too fast and squirrely for a beginner as you have to think about so many things at once.  It's possible to learn on a shortboard, but only a few people can learn that way without getting frustrated.  You definitely need friends to help you learn on a shortboard.

As you are very light for a surfer, that will help you learn to ride any board.  But when to catch the wave has a small margin for error on a shortboard.

A longboard lets you get used to paddling into a wave, popping up, and then riding the wave.  Plus riding other surfboards other than the regular shortboard thruster will make you a better surfer.

Eventually, you'll have the muscle memory to not even think about what you're doing to catch a wave.  Then you can ride a shortboard once you've figured out the differences.  Longboards allow you to catch a wave a lot earlier than if you were riding a shortboard.  Try something in the 9 foot range.
