The best surfboard is handmade by a reputable local shaper who is familiar with your break. Big brand names aren't necessarily the best boards. I have a few big name boards; Stewart, and Al Merrick, but rarely ride them. They don't perform as well at my break as the ones I bought from my local shaper.

Many good brands out there. When I play a sport I use what the pros use. Look in the mags or contests on tv to get an idea. Look up the pros online. The thruster (3 fin) has been the board of choice for nearly 3 decades.

There are 3 types of surfboards'

1. Shortboard- Intermediate to advanced surfers

2. Funboard- anyone can ride one of these

3. Longboard- beginner or super good high performance longboards
