Do you want to shortboard eventually? Or longboard?

Either way, you're going to want to start out longer. If you want to be a shortboarder, you can start out with a funboard type surfboard since you are smaller and lighter. I am 5' 3 and weigh less than 100. For that size, I would get a 7'4 - 7'10 funboard, and not too thick. Thicker is better for heavier people. The board will be long enough were it is stable so you can learn on it, but also smaller than a longboard so you can learn to maneuver it as well. If you outgrow this you can move to smaller boards from there.

If you want to be a longboarder, then a 8'6 - 9'0 board would be just fine. 8'6 is probably the smallest you can go and still consider it a longboard. Again, not too thick because you want to be able to sink it a little to turn.

I would say take a few lessons to make sure it's something you want to put a lot of time and money into. Then go to some surf shops and look at used boards. Probably the best way to go for your first board. Talk to the sales people and they will help you out a lot. Good luck!

I say, start with a long board. Its easier to keep yor balance, you can upgrade to a short board when you have the han of thing.

doesnt really matter about ur build all beginners are complete KOOKS so anythign u use wont work for ya...well longbboards are easier for the kooks so id say go for that i learnt on a 6fter and i was right but then again i am the pro :-p haahah just go for it
