Try one with 3-way lighting capability. This helps whether you want a bright, medium or low light. I don't recommend a pull-chain control, as I have been sleepy and pulled such a lamp over on myself once...woke me up fast. ( :) ) If you don't have a 3-way lamp, consider a tall shade on a regular lamp, use one of those spiral bulbs and you'll be able to throw a scarf over it to adjust the lighting. (Makes for cool decor, too)
