  1. The best thank yous are ones that are as specific as possible. Think of something you'll always remember about the teacher and the class. Thank them for a specific time that they helped you. Tell them about an activity that you did that you really liked.

I've received many thank you letters from students over the years. Occasionally, we begin to forget which student was which, but if you write a specific letter, we'll remember you for many years and will always appreciate your nice note.

    Here's one I received:

"Thank you very much for teaching the class. I am glad I chose to attend it. It helped me a lot.

I got a lot from the writing part, which was my weakest area. Although the work during and after class was hard, I am enjoying the results. I will try my best on the exam.

    Best wishes in the future!"

  2. Anything heartfelt, that makes it clear that you care about what they did for you.

This (edited) is an email I got from an advisee of mine when I told him that I was leaving.  I cried.

And I am very happy yet very sad to hear the news! More sad to be honest. I hope you have fun in (where you are traveling now) as well as (the school you are going to). I wish you all the best and I really do want to thank you for all you;ve helped me accomplish sophomore year. From helping me with classes to talking about cooking. I know you'll be a great dean and hopefully our paths will cross again in the future. If i dont get to talk to you beforehand i want to wish you a fun and great future ahead!
