I had to trim a large apple tree in the yard. I do wood carvings, mostly large items with wood already stablized.

I receintly made tweezers from a like stablized wood and want to do other small things or wooden utensils.

When things like salid turners are made to use, I understand there are spicific directions one must follow if they come in contact with food.

Can anyone help me.

  1. Most stabilized wood is treated with a product called PEG. It is not food safe.

Use your wood for non-food items or allow the wood to dry naturally and then use it for food items. Apple wood is pretty stable and will dry well, it just takes some time.

  2. Apple wood doesn't need chemical preservatives.  Preferably peel it, but in any case, get it off the ground so it can dry.    If you can dry it slowly there will be less cracking.  Inside a cool, dry outbuilding is the best place for it.  You can treat your food contacting carvings with almond or walnut oil, coconut oil, or less expensive food grade mineral oil to preserve and bring out the beauty of the wood.
