  1. Well the 'best' depends on your needs. The best performing lens is going to set you back a few thousand dollars, but since you're using an XTi I'm guess you're not looking to spend that kind of cash.

    Some lenses you may want to research are the EF 100-300mm, the EF 70-300mm, and the 100-400mm (as well as those that fhotoace suggested). The three I suggested go in order from lowest price/worst performance up to highest price/best performance.

    the reason there are so many different lenses is because each is designed for different photo situations.
