What is the best thing to do if I see a tornado?

This is the time right now to plan what to do for a tornado and make sure you have a NOAA weather alert radio The radios can alert you when a tornado warning is issued at night while sleeping.

A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop and you should pay close attention to the weather. A watch it typically issued with in 2-3 hours of the event.

When a tornado warning is issued that means doppler radar has detected rotation in a storm or trained spotters have spotted a rotating wall cloud, funnel cloud, or a tornado on the ground.

If a tornado warning is issued for your area, do not panic. Go to a place of safety. Go to the lowest floor of your house like the basement. Once in the basement get under a sturdy piece of furniture or go into a bathroom in the basement. If no basement is available go in to an interior room such as a closet. If that is not available go in to an bathroom without windows. Stay away from outside walls and windows. Cover your head to protect from flying debris. Never try to out run a tornado in a car, if cought in a car and can not take no place of safety, lay down in a ditch and cover your head. Do not take cover under a over pass. Do not stay in mobile homes as they do not offer protection and can be flown as easily as cars can.

if you in your car get out find a ditch or a brigde if you in your house open your doors and find the lowest spot in your house get food supply and water aand a flash light that should do it

If you're in your house you want to get to the lowest room of the house, ideally an underground basement and you want to get to the wall closest to the tornado because this will cut down on flying debris, and get underneath a sturdy table or desk. If you don't have an underground cellar, get to the lowest interior room of your house.

If you're outside get into a ditch or the lowest lying area you can. Do not try to outrun it in your car.

If you are in your house, seek shelter in it immediately. Go into the basement or the center of the lowest floor. Go under a sturdy piece of furniture such as a table and always stay away from windows. If a warning is issued prior to you seeing the tornado seek shelter when the warning is issued. If you wait until you see or hear it, it might be too late to seek a safe shelter.

If your are in your car or if your home is a mobile home or trailer, seek a safe shelter in the nearest building. If no shelter is available, lie in the nearest low lying spot with your hands over your head. Never attempt to escape a tornado with your car, a tornado can easily pick up your vehicle no matter how fast you're driving.

if your in your house, go to the basement and lay down on the ground and but a blanket over you, if your in a car either get away as fast as possible or find a ditch or building, if you do not seek shelter lay down on the ground and stay as flat as you can

Believe me.  I've been through it. Duck and cover.  There is nothing I have ever experieced that is worse then a tornado. A lot of people think it's cool to see or capture a tornado.  It's not.  I saw one and took action, my pets and me crouched in the basement while our house was just wisked away.  No house.  When I opened my eyes, all I saw was sky...that's when I knew my house was gone.

Car...get into a low lying or ditch.  If you are at home (like I was) get to the basement or lowest point of the house, cover yourself with a very heavy blanket, or a mattress.
