  1. The best thing to feed a Leo is a varried diet. I feed mine crickets, locusts and mealworms, all of which are gutloaded. There's only so much nutritional value one insect can constitute. Each species of insect has it's own level of nutritional value, comprising of various amounts of vitamins and minerals, not to mention other major components such as carbohydrates, lipids, water and proteins.

Insects are generally lacking in vitamin A, to resolve this problem insects should be gutloaded foods which will provide them with this vitamin. Carrots contain Beta-carotene which is converted  into vit A within the body, for this reason it makes an ideal candidate for a source of food for your insects.

Other foods should also be given to raise the nutritional value of the insect such as dark leafy vegitables, Prickly pears for there vit C content, mustard greens, squashes, apples and various other foods. Try to avoid feeding the insects acidic/citris fruits and vegitables such as oranges, lemons, tomatoes etc as these cause diarrhea within the insects resulting in dehydration. Cat/dog biscuits can also be considered as a food source for insects to raise their protein levels.

To further suppliment the leopard geckos diet, the insects should be dusted a max of twice weekly to prevent Hypervitaminosis (overdose of vitamins to a toxic level). Calcium is also an extremely important macromineral, a macromineral or macronutrient is something the body requires in relatively large amounts. Calcium should be supplimented every other day with a dish of calcium provided in the enclosure for the benefit of the gecko.

Wax worms are to be fed exclusively as a treat, do not feed more then two in a week. They contain very little nutrition and are high in fat, they do not benefit the gecko as a main food source. They can also be very addictive with some individuals so feed only as a treat.

  4. In captivity, leopard geckos are best fed mealworms, (Tenebrio molitor), or crickets, which you can order through the mail or purchase at any bait or pet shop. It is important to "power feed" such food items for 24-48 hours prior to giving them to your pet. This is done simply by using a cutdown one-gallon plastic milk jug that is filled with chicken or hog feed. Place a piece of potato or carrot in the jug to provide a source of water for the insects. The idea is to fill the insect with nutritious food itself so that your pet can then fill itself with a balanced diet. Many shop owners do not feed their insects such diets and if you merely feed-out recently purchased insects then your lizard will suffer from poor health within 3-6 weeks. The first signs of such nutritional problems are a soft or shortened lower jaw or bent limbs.

  5. Crickets, wax-worms, meal-worms. You can dust their food in calcium powder too to make sure their bones are nice and strong.
