What is the best time of year to buy a kayak for a good deal? also, what is a good beginner kayak?

What is the best time to buy a kayak in the midwest area? i would think winter?? Also....i am a completely new beginner in the kayaking world. What is a cheap but not crappy kayak that would be a good deal for me. i dont want something really fancy and i dont want something flimsy and weak. I also don't want a sit on top kayak....any advice anyone?

The winter would be a good time to look for used ones, but there is no way to try them out first.

If you are buying your first kayak, I'd really suggest trying them out first.

If you have a local kayak specialty shop or someone like REI, they may have paddle days where you can try out a dozen or so different models and find out what is important to you.

At a local one here (Minneapolis) last year, REI was giving out discount coupons for any kayak bought in the next several weeks.

Another advantage to REI is their return policy.  A friend decided that she really didn't like one after she had it out for a couple afternoon paddles, took it back and got a different one.

If price is a major factor.  Look at things like Craig's list or search on Ebay with a local distance specified.
