I tie them up and all but is there a variety that has strong stalks that will not fall over if they get too much water in a short period.

  1. What kind of tomatoes do you like? Indeterminate tomatoes are vines that can grow for great lengths as they develop fruit.

If you like a compact shrub try the Husky Cherry Tomatoes.  I personally like the Brandywines and Big Boys.  Both of those can get quite viny and long.

You can also cut down the non-fruiting branches if it's weight you're trying to save, but keep enough leaves to protect the fruit from the hot sun.  You can then place those stems in water and within a week or two that stem will grow roots, making another plant for you.

  2. there are two kinds of tomato plants.determinate and indertirminate.  determinate plants will frow to a certain height and produce fruit more or less all at once.  indeterminate plants produce fruit over a long period, but keep growing all the time.  i had one of these once that grew on a fence and grew to 18ft.  of course there are many varieties of tomatos in each class of plant.
