We have a very high ceiling that has recessed lights. One of the lights has blown and needs to be replaced. Problem is, even our longest ladder leaves us feet short of reaching the bulb. We need a tool that we can use to remove/replace the bulb without breaking them. These are the energy saving bulbs... the florescent spiral ones.

  1. You should be able to (very carefully) use the same tool you've used in the past for removing incandescent bulbs from these recessed fixtures.

It is true that these CFLs contain miniscule amounts of mercury, so you should exercise reasonable caution while removing the bulb - and you should be sure to take it to a CFL recycling facility for proper disposal.

If you do break the bulb accidently, be sure to open windows and doors to ventilate the room - leave the area for a little while as the mercury vaporizes and dissipates. When you return, carefully sweep up the glass shards and dispose of them with caution.
