The answer is the one that fits your needs. Do you do a lot of panoramic landscapes or do you do portraits or sports. There are basically two types of heads. A ball head and a tilt pan head. I prefer a tilt pan head for most things but that is just me. I grew up with a tilt pan head and use this for most things. A tilt pan head is good for landscapes because you can lock in the angle of the camera and pan to one side or the other. A ball head lets you move the camera however you want but does not easily pan to one side or the other. Think about what kind of shots you do most and go from there.
