What is the best type of clay available and which type of clay can be hardened in a kitchen oven?

I wanted to make clay models at home as a hobby, so i wanted to know what type of clay to use .

I want to harden the clay in my kitchen oven and paint the clay using acrylic paints, so which clay is ideal?

and where can i get this clay in the uk?

  1. Sculpy clay is probably the best you find (available in any arts/crafts store. Its sold in small blocks and is a little more expensive than the others. No matter how long it sits, it remains workable and can be put in the oven.  


  2. Hi Most art shops sell modelling clay, it seems to have an acrylic base so painting with acrylics would be fine. Theres a few on the market.

    They come in 1 kilo packs and they are very expensive compared to standard clay. The cheapest one is called Jovi. For 1kg of this you would get 20 kg of normal cheap clay.The good news is that they do come in a skin colour so are ideal for your use. The material does dry out very quickly after which it is useless. So use sparingly as you go.
