What is the best type of counter top?

Question

Going into this renovation project I assumed that granite was the best choice. Now I'm hearing good things about siltstone and corrian (I know that might be spelled wrong). Can anybody explain the differences and benefits of each? Just trying to find the best option for my kitchen.

I would still go with granite.  Easily most beautiful, can't burn or scorch.  Can be chipped by a very heavy pot, like a Le Creuset.

Silestone has many good properties, but in my opinion it still looks obviously man-made.  Corian looks like nice plastic, but still plastic.

There is Pros's and Con's to every countertop. It depends on what you are looking for in a Countertop.

1. Granite

Granite is not stain resistant and Must be Sealed on a regular basis. Will have Visible Seams. Cannot be fixed, or is not renewable. Will Scratch or chip with something heavy and or sharp enough. Small scratches can be taken out but is alot of work to do so. Very Elegant as far as looks.

2. Quartz Surface (Sile Stone, Cambria, Zodiaq)

Stain Resistant. Will have Visible Seams. Difficult to scratch. However Non Renewable. Scratches and stains cannot be repaired at all. Cannot set hot pans on because of thePoly-Mere that is used to hold product together and make it scratch resistant. Also Certain Chemicals will pull out color.

3. Corian, Hi-Mac. (Solid Surface Products)

Seamless Product and Stain Resistant. Only product approved for Hospital and Food Service use because of Bacterial Resistance. Will scratch easier than stone products, however it is renewable and very easy to repair. Request that a hot pad or trivit is used uner pots and pans.

Usually i tell my customers that if they do not use and abuse their kitchen Stone is a good choice. If you use and abuse your kitchen Solid Surface is the way to go.
