We need help :P

  1. Ballet is the basis for all types of dance but if you really don't want to take it then i would start with jazz which is a pumped up version of ballet so that would be your best bet. All of the kinds of dances are different so it depends if you want to take this to a professional level or if ts just for fun. If you want to do all of them then why not? Its better to start them all now assuming that you're in your teens. Good luck!!! And i hope this helps!!

  2. Jazz would be a great place to start! Because jazz is the basis for hip hop, you'll find it easier to pick up hip hop once you have the fundamentals of jazz mastered. What's also good about jazz is that it's related to modern which is the more fundamental form of contemporary. Contemporary is a sub-genre of modern, like the daughter of modern. Contemporary is very hard to define and therefore, it is very hard to ever have a contemporary class that conforms to all the contemporary styles.

After you conquer jazz, you should take a few modern classes to get the feel of contemporary. It'll strengthen your basis in jazz and teach you a few newer approaches. You'll strengthen your base training since you won't be taking any ballet classes which is the base for all styles.

A great class to take if you find them in your area (probably isn't a regular class that meets once a week) is Movement Improvisation (and/or Contact Improvisation). It loosens up the body and get your creative juices flowing. The problems with ballet/jazz/modern is that its rigid and mostly set in technique. Contemporary is achieved by dancing your expression and moving to communicate. If your movements are rigid and there is no creativity, your contemporary solo/duets/performances will not look as good.

If you can't find a movement improv class, just turn on contemporary dance music (Elisa, Adele, A Fine Frenzy, Damien Rice, etc) and move however the music drives you to. Channel the emotion of the song and find ways to express it. Even if just in your bedroom.

  3. I know you're not for ballet but if you're serious about Jazz and Contemporary then I strongly suggest you take Ballet. It's where you learn technique and build up skills for other types of dance. If you don't intend on taking ballet I would start with Hip Hop. It's fun and as a first time dancer you will learn more fun "trick" moves right away than with other styles. Modern is a strange but fun kind of dance. If you like contemporary then you'll probably like Modern. Tap is fun too. Like, people usually think of sherly temple kind of tap when they think of it but there's so many different kinds of it. It's crazy. If you get a good teacher, you'll like it.

  4. Ballet,Tap,andJazz, are the basics and what you start learning.it is truly alot of fun.you and your BFFL will love it!

  5. Start off easy with waltz and ballroom dancing. Its a dying dance form, but very beautiful when done by couples that can do it.

Then you should progress to swing (not to hard and super fun), disco, and old school dances like the twist.

Once mastering the easy dances go for Latin dance forms like Salsa (lots of fluid movement thats hard to do, belly dancing, pole dancing (great exercise too!) and square dancing, Yes square dancing, its a blast to dance and take alot of coordination and comprehension skill.

Doing all this you'll be a great all around dancer, perfectly capable of attending hodowns, formal balls, or clubs. You may have noticed I left out hiphop, rock and contemperary. Heres my opinon on them. Hip hop is just *** shaking to the beat. Anyone can do that. Rock is headbanging and in mosh pits involves punching, if you do thi take up boxing not dancing. Contemperary dances are alrite to pick up but they are like fads and disappear quickly. When was the last time you danced the "Livin the Vida Loca?"

These dances I listed above will never go out of style and will endure the test of time. Except maybe ballroom, more people need to take it up!

  6. Do jazz cause then you will get some basic technique. Once you have this you can move onto contemporary and hiphop

  7. hip hop i did it before it's awesome

  8. well to be honest ballet is the foundation for most dances. I took an adult ballet class and I really loved it. Jazz is fun and would be easy to pick up.  Tap was very hard for me.  I would try Jazz if you are looking for a formal class or hip hop if you just want a fun class.

  9. Modern?

    Tap?

    Limbering or Stretch Class?

Ballet is such a good posture creating dance.!!

  10. well ballet is the best stater(she's right) also maybe for ur chuch or school maybe joining a musical play it would help then u learn all kinds of dances and then move on to jazz then get into the harder stuff and within a year or so you'll have it mastered so i took dance for twoo years and i was pretty good but i do volley ball now!!!! but u should do dance

    go girl

  11. the two step

  12. Hip hop or street dance is fun to do with friends. Also Broadway style dancing is cool too.

  13. I am a dancer and i think if you are flexible then jazz and if you just want to start out easy then hip hop. But they are completely different too so if you want shaking and jumping hip hop if you want slower and harder jazz!! Hope i helped :)

  14. hip-hop and jazz and are the funnest

  15. i recommend starting off with hip hop to get some rythem (know thats spelled wrong)

  16. I would start with Dance Dance Revolution it would get ur feet moving.

  17. ballet although you don'tt care for it is best forbeginnerss because it helps build up you skills by teaching you the movements, techniquess, and positions for every type of dance.

i would recommend lyrical its a mix of ballet and jazz, and its really fun.

  18. Rumba, Samba, Latin dances in general are easy but fun. No idea what Jazz dance is, but Hip-Hop is an art unto itself... takes a long time not to look awkward doing it.

  19. I would say jazz if you don't want to do ballet. (I didn't either) But jazz and hip hop are kind of intertwined but you learn important things to carry into other types of dance in jazz. So jazz!! ps. jazz is fun.

    hope this helps!

  20. Heyyy!!!

    I'm a competitive dancer!!!

I started off with tap but, that's because I didn't know I would continue for so long.

Unfortunately, ballet is a really good dance to do.  It's the core to all dances!!!  I didn't like ballet when I started, but know it's fine!

If you just want to go into dance for fun or you really want to have fun, I would go with any of the three you want to go into!

If you are a  somewhat (at least) flexible person, and have lot's of feeling for when a song comes on, and if you like to do jumps,  try contemperary.

If you have that funky style, and you like sweat pants, go with hip hop!

If you like to do jumps and are somewhat flexible (at least), and you have a snazzy feel, jazz is meant for you!

If you wanted to try something else:

Tap is great if you are rythmic, and can keep the tempo to a fast, or slow pace.

Acro is cool if you want to gain flexiblility, and you want to do tricks, and be strengthened, and stretched.

Musical theatre is great if you like music, and you are good and learning how to lip sync to the words, or sing to them easily.  It's tons of fun!

Lyrical is for a musical, and emotional person.  Not as in crying emotion, but as in you can really tell a story with how you dance, and can show it on your face, not just a blank face doing the dance.

Breakdancing is fun if you want to do tricks and crazy moves!  Even though it may not show it, it builds up your strenght!  It's also a sweat pants style.

Again, ballet is the fundementals of all dance, so if you want to move forward in your dance career, I would suggest doing ballet in a few years (or even sooner!!! :) )  Lot's of people don't do ballet, and that's fine, but if you really want to grow, do ballet.  I never did ballet until I started competitive :)  Ballet also builds strength.

All dances are great, and total fun!  They all bring strength to at least one part of your body!

Good luck in your desicion an dhave fun as a dancer!!!

  21. Well if ballet is out of the question (and i know it gets really boring so I would understand why) then I suggest you take Jazz. Its a lot of fun and you can learn so much. If not jazz then hip hop or lyrical would be good also. If you don't intend on spending hours of practice in the dance you choose, don't take something like tap or flamenco as they require hours of patience and practice to master. Good luck with your dancing!

  22. since you dont want ballet you should do jazz

itll help you strech out and be more flexible and then you should go into hip hop
