What is the best type of dog?

Have you thought about maybe a mutt.    I would go to the local shelter or rescue and spend some time with some of those dogs.   You may fall in love with them

A Boxer is what you want. They were originally bred in China to be a babysitter. They were bred to be strong, look and sound fierce, but to be gentle, protective, and very aware of kids.  Unlike the Pit Bull, they are not bred to fight, but they absolutely CAN, and will, especially in defense of a child.  They prefer, instead of fighting, to bark ferociously to ward off a threat; or to separate the child from the source of the threat by placing themselves between the child and the threat. They are actually a very loving, and gentle dog that tolerate a lot of  active "play" from a child that doesn't know how to play. They have a "sixth-sense" about sickness, and danger and respond well to the needs of a child. They are also the true "fire" dog; not the Dalmatian. They will actually watch a fire for hot coals, and will paw or tamp them out if they pose a danger.

I can truly say this as an experienced owner of Boxers for over 12 years. And I just got a new one. It's demeanor is exactly in line with the others I've owned, which is the behavorial scenario I have given you.

They are very intelligent dogs, train well and obey well. and do a remarkable job of communiting with humans...far better than any other dogs I've owned. (And I've owned over 50 dogs, just for myself and family) Puppies are very rambunctious, and playful, and love to chew things; so be aware of this and give them space to play (especially with other dogs) and keep them plenty of chew toys.

The best type of dog is the one who's owner thoroughly researched the breed of his choice.  This owner has also done his homework as to how much time, money and commitment it takes to own a dog.

There is a breed or mixed breed for every person and lifestyle out there.  It's a matter of the human being committed to raising it properly to ensure both human and dog have the happiest life together.

Try going to your county pound, rescue organization, shelter, or humane society...There are many places to rescue a dog. They have purebreds and mutts.

I have two mutts. I love mine.

You are going to have to train any dog to be polite especially if you get a puppy..dogs don't come already trained unless you get one from a family who has to part with their pet.

You will have to teach your kids to be polite to the dog too. Kids and dogs make good playmates but both the kids and dogs need to learn manners. (some kids hurt dogs by rough play, or don't feed or care for them correctly)

Any breed can be trained to be polite around kids.

Most medium-large breeds are pretty strong.

Well I would say a golden retriever because they are very friendly with lots of people, but they aren't the best kind of security dog.

pitbull!!! but you have to get one when they are just a puppy, so you can trained them how you want them to be. My cousin had a pitbull, and he was very palyful with kids, and very proctective too, but that was because he trained him to be that way.
