What is the best type of grass to grow in your backyard?

I just learned that there are basically two types of grass: Fescue (gesundheit!) and Bermuda.  One of them stays green in the winter and the other turns brown.  I've been trying to talk my husband into doing square patches of each to make a giant chess board on our lawn.  Then, we could invite our friends over and  let them be the pieces.  We could move them around in a game. Hubby says no, cuz we have too many g*y male friends and they'd all fight to be the Queens.

You have to give us more info that that...is it sunny or shady? Are there kids playing on it? Dogs? Are you in the north or the south. Are there trees? How will the backyard be used. These are the things we have to know before we can give you a good answer.

If it's sunny, try Tifway or Tifsport Bermuda in the south. Bluegrass in the middle states. St Augustine in the coastal south or in the shade. Zoyzia for a manicured lawn. It all depends...sorry I couldn't give you a simple answer.
