What is the best type of horse for a first time horse owner?

I would like some advice on what kind of horse to buy. This horse would be my first horse and I would like to know should I get an older horse or a younger horse and if so what kind would be best. I am 16 years old and I have riding experience and is still learning as I go.

I got my first horse when i was 14.  He was a 9 yo QH gelding.  He had only been gelded for a year and still thought he was a stud[which definatley wasn't fun for an inexperienced horse owner to deal with].  He was trained as a barrel racing horse so he definately knew how to GO. stopping wasn't as much fun for him as going was.  We constantly fought over who was and should have been in control but over the past few years he's turned into an incredible horse and one I couldn't live without.  

QH are generally calm by nature, but it depends on the training its had.  I wouldn't recommend getting a horse older than 15 because in 5 or so years when you really get into your riding, you probably wont be able to ride it due to its age.  TWH, Appaloosas, Morgans, QH's, and Paints are all very calm, well natured horses. I would look for one that was suitable for a beginner but you definately don't have to get an old one to find that.  There are plenty of level headed horses out there that arent on their last limb.

this will help you alot.. get a horse that is well broke or you will become frustrated with it.. and make it a worse horse

some  young horses are very good - but I would say no younger than 5 or 5 for you ...
