What is the best type of laptop for just surfing the web and schoolwork?

I am looking into getting a laptop. I just need it for like the web and stuff

I like the macs but I want a good performance computer.

Suggestions/brands?

and i have a PC now, can I use my software on a mac?

I am currently keeping my eye on the new Gateway 6842 (or 6836 for the USA)  Cnet.com is a good place to start looking, they provide trustworthy reviews of anything electronic. Anything. Some highlights of the 6842 are:
